Panama is a country that has lots of adventures to offer. Its capital is the biggest city in the country and although it is small you can find so many things to do in one day or a full week. You’ll love the food and culture of Panama, so here are some Panama City bucket list experiences for your trip.
Panama City is an exciting place to visit. There are so many things to do and see that you could spend months there, if not years!
Panama City has been around for hundreds of years and has seen a lot of history pass through its streets. You’ll find old buildings that have been turned into museums or restaurants all over town, but there’s also some new stuff too! If you’re looking for something modern and futuristic, don’t worry; Panama City has lots of those too.
The Panama Canal is the world’s largest ship canal. It was built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and its completion in 1914 marked a significant milestone in international trade. Visitors can explore the locks on their own, or experience them by watching boats pass through. The canal is 100 miles long, necessitating eight separate locks for ships to navigate it safely. Enjoy views of tropical birds and flowers as you watch huge freighters make their way from one ocean to another.
Casco Viejo is the city’s oldest quarter, so you can explore its narrow cobblestone streets and visit some of the oldest buildings in Panama City. The Casco Viejo is also home to some of the oldest wooden houses in the Americas, which have been preserved as part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site
Old Panama is the archaeological site where Panama City was located from its foundation. The city was founded in 1519 and remained there until Henry Morgan sacked it in 1671. The site remained abandoned for nearly 200 years before being re-discovered by American businessman William Nelson Cromwell who had plans to build a canal through Central America. His dream was never realized, and he passed away before work began on his project.
The Amador Causeway connects Panama City with four islands: Naos, Perico, Culebra and Flamenco. It was constructed in 1913, with rocks excavated during the construction of the Panama Canal. Is a great place to walk, bike, have a nice lunch or dinner and even buy some souvenirs.
Panama has lots of birds and other wildlife that you can check out on a nature hike through the jungle, inside the city! Did you know that there are over 975 species of birds in Panama?
You can go on your own or take a guided tour in The Metropolitan Park or a little bit farther in the Gamboa park. We recommend taking a guided tour so that your guide knows where to look for animals. It’ll also help keep you safe from snakes and other dangers lurking in the jungle (like giant spiders).
When you’re in Panama City, make sure to try some local food! Panamanian cuisine is a fusion of the foods of Spanish colonists, African slaves, and native people.
In Panama City itself you can find many different kinds of food—the most popular dishes include sancocho (a stew made with chicken or pork), tamales (a cornmeal pastry filled with meat or fish), and ceviche (raw fish marinated in lime juice).
There are many places where you can find this and many other local dishes, some of the most populars areas are:
Mercado del marisco
Sabores del Chorrillo
Isla Perico in the Amador Causeway
